Turkey Ends 12-Year Wait To Win Volleyball Title

Sultan's First European Crown Is Secured With Thrilling Victory Over Italy

The Turkish women's volleyball team ended a 12-year wait to be crowned European champions with a thrilling victory over Italy in the final of the 2023 European Volleyball Championship on Friday.

In a match that lasted nearly three hours, the Turkish team rallied from a one-set deficit to win 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 28-26, 27-25, 15-12) in front of a partisan crowd in Ankara.

It is Turkey's first European title since 2011 and the victory was all the more remarkable considering that the team had not won a set in their previous two matches against Italy.

The Turkish team was led by Eda Erdem, who scored 24 points, and Zehra Güneş, who added 19 points. Italian star Paola Egonu was her team's top scorer with 27 points.

The victory was a huge boost for the Turkish team, which is now ranked number one in the world. The team will now turn its attention to the 2023 World Cup.
